To the Community of We’koqma’q First Nation and Friends Across Unama’ki / Cape Breton:
We have been excitedly preparing for the Inaugural Chief Sandy Googoo Music Festival to honor the memory and legacy of our beloved Chief Sandy Googoo. However, after careful reflection, we have decided it is in the best interest of our community to postpone the festival until 2025.
At this time, our community is facing two critical matters that demand our full attention: the ongoing land claim involving the Whycocomagh commercial district and the upcoming Chief and Council elections. Both of these issues are vital to the future of We’koqma’q First Nation, offering a chance to secure our rightful land, strengthen our economic future, and shape the direction of our leadership.
Postponing the festival will allow us to address these pressing matters without distraction, while ensuring that when the event is held in 2025, we will give it, and the memory of Chief Sandy Googoo, the respect and focus they deserve.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritize the future of our community. Together, we will overcome these challenges and be ready to celebrate in unity and strength.
